Chlorine Winterization Program Above Ground

Winter Care Products Needed:

Winter Kit
Strip Kwik & Kleen It
Surface Cleaner
Pump Protector
12K or 24K
Filter cleaners - degreaser & descaler
Water Line cleaner & exposed areas
1/2 can per season
  1. Have water tested and chemically balanced.
  2. Do all housekeeping chores. Clean exposed pool surfaces and water line with Surface Cleaner. Brush and vacuum pool - remove ladders and accessories. Clean skimmer and pump lint basket.
  3. The night before closing or several days ahead of time, use Strip Kwik and Kleen It as directed to clean sand. Follow directions on bottles for usage.
    1. If you have a Main Drain:
      1. Lower water 2" to 4" below skimmer. (unless you have an AquaDoor - you do not have to drain). Prevent losing pump prime by inserting gizzmo into skimmer. Continue lowering water through the main drain. If the skimmer is not threaded and you cannot use a gizzmo, put a 1/2 gallon plastic carton filled with water in the skimmer to act as a freeze protectant.
      2. Add Winter Kit. Allow to circulate for at least 24 hours. • Plug the return.
      3. Remove the hoses if they are flex pipe. PVC pipes, close valve and wrap up pipes.
      4. Cover Pool.
    2. If you do not have a main drain
      1. Add your Winter Kit as directed. Allow to circulate no less than 24 hours. Drain water by hooking up vacuum system and putting filter to waste. Drain water down below skimmer 2" to 4" (unless you have an Aquadoor - there is no need to drain). Plug the skimmer with the Gizzmo (if the skimmer is threaded at the bottom) or plug return with winter plug and put a 1/2 gallon plastic jug filled with water in the skimmer to act as a freeze protectant. Remove hoses - if they are flex hose. If PVC, close valve and wrap up pipes.
      2. Cover Pool
  4. Shut down filter - remove cap/plug from bottom to allow water to drain out. Remove pressure gauge and store.
  5. Shut down multiport - Prop handle up between two of the notches. If you have winterization on the multiport top - use that.
  6. Shut down the pump - remove plug and basket. Store. Spray 1/2 can of Pump Protector into housing area.
  7. If you have an automatic cleaner, store according to manufacturers directions.
  8. Periodically, as needed, drain excess water from cover. Leave a half-inch to an inch of water on the cover. An air pillow placed under the cover, towards the middle of the pool will help disburse the water to the edge for easy siphoning. Our Cover Savers work well for siphoning water off the pool cover.
